Basic silver Jewelry - 8 weeks

The basic silver jewelry course is designed to get the novice started in jewelry-making. Several projects are undertaken in order to teach the basic skills of sawing, soldering, and finishing pieces. The student is then encouraged to work on several jewelry pieces of his/her own design, one with a cabochon gem setting. Students may repeat the course while following a more independent sequence of projects.

Simple Silver Casting - 4 weeks

Many objects, either found as hard shapes or made from plastic, can be duplicated in sterling silver using cuttlefish bone or casting sand. The technique is simple and immediate, taking no more than 30 minutes. It can easily be done at home without expensive equipment. This is an ideal method for making several copies of the same object particularly if they are flat with one side facing up or with two faces.

NOTE A class fee of approximately $50.00 (payable to the instructor) will be collected for supplies and some sterling silver material at the start of the course


 

2010 October Wednesday 6:30 - 9~30 pm


 Surface treatments - 4 weeks

The objective of the course is to introduce the students to a variety of surface altering techniques including "mokume gane", the "marriage of metals" , "reticulation", hammered textures and enameling to manipulate the surface of a piece of metal particularly sterling, but also copper and brass. These techniques can then be applied to various pieces of jewelry as required.

NOTE A supply fee of approximately $50.00 (payable to the instructor) will be collected to cover materials at the start of the course

Silver Jewelry - Rings with Stones - 4 weeks

If you would like to make finger rings set with gemstones out of sterling silver this is the course for you. This course will lead you through the steps in making fashionable rings set with your favorite gems using sterling silver sheet and wire.

A Supply fee of $50.00 includes basic equipment and some silver for the 2 projects in the course.

Silver Jewelry - Focus on Stone Setting - 4 weeks

Beginner and Advanced students interested in incorporating faceted and cabochon gems into their jewelry projects will be instructed in the manufacturing of bezel and prong settings for their stones The objectives of the course will focus on several techniques of preparing gemstone settings, particularly for round faceted stones ,and cabochons. Upon completion of the course the students will be able to make their own settings and know the steps in preparing commercially available mounts to set stones for final presentation.

A supply fee of $50.00 will be collected to cover materials for the first 2 projects.

Students should bring to class

A) a jeweler's saw frame ( found at Dowd Supply, 36 Rosemount Avenue, Ottawa, ON, K1Y1P4 , Tel: 613-236-9493 ) and

B) a 3" C clamp ( found at any Canadian Tire or any Hardware store).
